ROBBERY: NSCDC Arraigns Farmer Over Theft, Cruelty To Animal


The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kogi State has arraigned a 25-year-old farmer, Sunday Madagwu, for allegedly collaborating with his brother to steal and slaughter a cow without the consent of its owner.

Madagwu of Itoduma village in Ibaji local government of Kogi was charged with criminal conspiracy, theft and cruelty to an animal contrary to sections 97(2), 207, 286(1) and 287 of the Penal Code was arraigned on Monday in Lokoja.

According to the NSCDC prosecuting officer, E.S. Onu Esq., the accused collaborated with one Goddy Madagwu (now at large) and armed themselves with knives to commit the crime.

He said that at about 9am, the suspect and his accomplice invaded the premises of one Nuhu Mohammed, “forcefully untied and slaughtered a very big cow” belonging to one Ademu Daddy without his consent.

The duo, he said, dragged the slaughtered to a nearby river, cut it up and went away with all the parts, adding that the cow which belonged to Daddy was in the custody of Mohammed.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. His counsel, Mr I.O. Aliyu, then applied for bail of the accused, pleading presumption of innocence of the accused as provided for in the law books.

Animoku admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 and a surety in like sum. He transferred the case to Idah Chief Magistrate Court, the area where the offence was committed, and adjourned to April 14 for continuation of the case in Idah.
