A Fourty -year old old man is currently been held in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,(NSCDC) Ogun State Command in connection with vandalism.
The Suspect, Raji Akeem, male who said he stays at Alagbado area of Lagos state was arrested by the Anti -vandalism team of the corps who were on routine surveillance patrol at Ipara in Remo North local Government, Ogun State.
The suspect who were caught in the pipeline right of way syphoning fuel from the pipeline they have vandalised into their waiting buses full of jerricans and drums.they took to their heals immediately they sighted our men,they were pursued and one of them was arrested while others escaped.
The syndicate who specialise in vandalising of pipeline and trade in petroleum products syphoned from pipeline hid drums and kegs inside those buses to prevent being detected by security operatives.
During an interview,the suspect said the arrest was unfortunate one as he was already planning to quit the business soonest”I have decided to gather small money so that I can quit” adding that he entered into the business to meet his financial obligations.
Furthermore, Raji, father of seven explained that pipeline vandalism has been lucrative and it served as a means of survival because he realises minimum of fourty thousand naira on each trip.
Commenting the Public Relations Officer Mr.Kareem Olanrewaju confirmed the incident and said the case will be thoroughly investigated. “This period of the year is a period where the hoodlum like to make quick bucks and we have taken measure curtail them during this period “.
Items recovered from them are;two (2) ford buses with registration number Lagos FKJ 342 XC and Lagos LSD 522 XE,13 drums of petroleum product, eleven of 25litres kegs containing petroleum product, 9 empty drums and 43 of empty 50 liters kegs.the fuel content is 3,525 litres.
Finally, Kareem, urged the public not to hesitate in giving timely and adequate information to the corps regarding vandalism activities by unscrupulous citizens stressing that the Corps has been enjoying cooperation of the public especially communities in pipeline areas.
